The Basilica Minore de Santuario de San Pedro Bautista, the oldest church in Quezon City, dates to 1590. While other historical churches may have changed from one religious order to another, this church has always been held by the Franciscan Order, making it the oldest Franciscan church in the Philippines. Father Juan de San Pedro Bautista, a Spanish Franciscan priest who suffered martyrdom in Nagasaki, Japan, together with 25 other martyrs, built this church. As a result, the church also serves as a museum for the relics of the saint and the place of pilgrimage for Franciscan devotees. The church complex also houses the Museo Bautista de San Pedro (MuBSP), a display of the artifacts collected by the Order over the centuries. The compound also has a Japanese-inspired garden as a memorial for the faithful from that country who were martyred along with the friar.
In the Spotlight: The Feast of San Pedro Bautista is celebrated yearly on February 6.
