The Unsung Captain of Kangkong
Before the cédulas were torn and the cry rang out across Pugad Lawin, there was a man named Apolonio Samson in Barrio Kangkong who opened his doors to this nation’s emancipators.
Both a farmer and captain of the revolutionary forces, Samson sheltered 500 Katipuneros within his home and yard, and gave up his own livestock to feed the hundreds who had taken refuge within his walls.
His daughters, Martina and Segundina, carried forward his legacy by burying torn cedulas made of katsa near a church. Today, the road that bears his name runs through the very heart of the revolution’s geography, linking Epifanio de los Santos Avenue to the Bonifacio Monument Roundabout.
