The Cry That Started a Revolution
Step onto the very ground where a nation declared itself free. In 1986, 23rd of August, Andres Bonifacio asked Katipuneros at Pugad Lawin the question of “Kalayaan o Kamatayan?,” to which their answer was a thunderous rejection of Spanish colonial rule that ignited the Philippine Revolution–the momentous tearing of cédulas.
Developed on the site of the house of Juan Ramos, son of Melchora “Tandang Sora” Aquino, the shrine bears statues crafted by National Artist Napoleon Abueva. This monument captures a collective act of 25 Katipuneros in the moment of rebellion: among them Bonifacio, Emilio Jacinto, and Tandang Sora herself. Ang Sigaw ng Pugad Lawin, a designated national historical landmark, preserves the sacred ground where the bare effort of tearing a piece of fabric became the strongest force our country has ever made thus far.
